Rubber Plant Care Instructions - Ficus Elastica
Light - Depending on which variety of rubber plant you have, the light requirement will vary. The dark burgundy variety can withstand spaces with lower natural light but can flourish in bright light as well. Variegated varieties such as the ruby or tineke require more intense light to keep their varying colours.
Water - The ficus elastica wants its soil to be lightly moist at all times, but they do not like to sit in soggy soil. Weekly waterings are typically ample as they allow the plant a period to dry out and breathe, but in the winter months watering frequency can be dialed back.
Rotate your plant periodically to ensure even growth on all sides and dust the leaves often so the plant can photosynthesize efficiently. When dusting the leaves, also take the opportunity to inspect the undersides and keep an eye out for pests.
*Just like people, each plant is a unique living thing and may have varying needs, especially in their individual locations. These are basic guidelines that may have to be augmented slightly depending on the environment you place your plant in, as well as frequency and amount of water given.
