Cacti + Succulent Care Instructions

cacti succulents cactus terrarium planter planting toronto florist care instructions
Lighting - Since naturally, cacti and succulents are desert-dwelling plants, they require a couple hours of bright, direct sunlight daily. They thrive in south and west facing windows but can sometimes make do in an eastern window as well.
Water - If the plant is receiving many hours of bright, direct sunlight, they can take a thorough watering when the soil becomes dry. Allow soil to dry out completely in between watering and never let the plants sit in soggy soil. If it’s receiving enough sunlight, this shouldn’t be an issue. Adjust watering accordingly during the winter months when the sun is not as intense. Do not mist them or let water sit on the leaves or flesh as this will cause rot.
Cacti and succulents can be placed outdoors in the summertime, just be careful to bring them in when it rains and when the temperature starts to drop below 12 degrees. Keep them away from freezing temps and cold drafts.
Remember, cacti and succulents can tolerate drought, but that doesn’t mean they prefer it.
And if a leaf falls off your succulent? Leave it where it falls! It should produce roots that can eventually be nudged into the soil where a new plant will form. Boom, you just propagated a brand new plant!
*Just like people, each plant is a unique living thing and may have varying needs, especially in their individual locations. These are basic guidelines that may have to be augmented slightly depending on the environment you place your plant in, as well as frequency and amount of water given.
