How to Choose the Perfect Vase for Your Flowers

How to Choose the Perfect Vase for Your Flowers

Flowers are one of the best ways to brighten our spaces. Whether it's a few stems of your favourite bloom, or a larger bouquet, choosing the right vase can significantly enhance the beauty of your floral display. We’ll guide you on how to select the perfect vase to complement your flowers, ensuring that they shine in all their natural glory.

The first thing you need to consider is the type of flowers you plan to display. Different flowers have varying stem lengths, shapes, and sizes, and your vase choice should harmonize with these features. For long-stemmed flowers like roses, lilies, or sunflowers, opt for tall and slender vases that provide support and allow the stems to stand straight. For shorter blooms such as daisies or peonies, choose shorter, wider vases that will showcase the natural shape of the flowers. If you’re displaying a mixed bouquet however, choosing a vase with a slightly flared neck will accommodate the various stem lengths well.

Here are some of the vase shapes we work with at Oleander:

Cylinder Vases: These come in different sizes, are versatile and work well with most flower types. They provide stability for both short and tall stems and can accommodate a round compact style of arrangement as well as a more flowing garden style.

Bud Vases: Perfect for showcasing a single, delicate flower like a tulip or a rose. The small neck of a bud vase supports the flower's natural curve.

Hourglass Vases: These vases are wider at the middle and can support fuller arrangements, making them suitable for bouquets with mixed flower types or very large arrangements.

Bowl or Low Vases: Great for short, compact flowers like daisies or peonies. The wide opening allows us to create a lush and full arrangement - perfect for a table centrepiece!

You next need to consider the colour and material that the vase is made of as these can play a significant role in the overall aesthetic of your floral display. Keep the following things in mind:

Clear glass offers a classic and timeless look, allowing the focus to remain on the flowers. It's versatile and suits almost any flower type. Plus, it makes it easier to see when your flowers need a water top up or refresh. Coloured glass adds a pop of colour and can complement or contrast with the flowers. Ceramic containers provide texture and a rustic feel. Choose earthy tones for a natural look or bold colours for a more vibrant contrast. Modern and sleek, metal vases can be an excellent choice for contemporary flower arrangements. Metallic finishes like gold or silver provide an elegant touch.

Lastly, size matters! When selecting a vase, make sure it is proportionate to the size of your bouquet. A vase that is too small can make your flowers look crowded, while a vase that is too large may overpower delicate blooms. The general rule of thumb is that the vase should be one-half to two-thirds the height of your bouquet.
