Saturday 22 April 2023 is Earth Day. This event is celebrated annually on the same day, all around the world. Earth Day’s mission is to help people and organizations reduce their environmental impact.
The first Earth Day, held in the USA on April 22, 1970, saw the largest participatory environmental movement on the planet. Despite the initial Earth Day being focused on the United States, it has since gone international with April 22 being celebrated globally. On Earth Day 2020, over 100 million people around the world observed the 50th anniversary in what is being referred to as the largest online mass mobilization in history! Wow!
Here at Oleander we truly care about our planet. We know we can do more but in honor of Earth Day, we wanted to share with you some of the things we’re doing right now to help protect it:
- Using biodegradable floral foam
- Stocking seasonal, locally-grown flowers
- Using plastic vase liners by customer request only
- Offering paper wraps instead of cellophane
- Recycling packaging as ‘stuffing’ in floral deliveries
- Encouraging return customers to reuse vases for floral arrangements
- Stocking Canadian and sustainably-made products
- Turning off all the lights in unused rooms
- Taking public transit and ride-sharing on our commutes wherever possible
According to earthday.ca, the day is a great opportunity to take action for the environment. So what can you do to celebrate this important day? Here are a few easy peasy suggestions to get you started:
- Reduce, reuse, recycle: commit to cutting down on what you throw away
- Conserve water: take showers instead of baths
- Choose sustainable products from local businesses
- Take a reusable bag with you when shopping
- Choose non-toxic products for your home
- Commit to turning lights off when you leave a room
