January is finally over, and with it, many peoples’ good intentions for achieving their health and wellness goals. The cold and dark days of winter can certainly make it easier to abandon those healthy habits we’ve been trying so hard to create. But fear not! With our top tips, you can enjoy the rest of the winter season without sacrificing your well-being.
Prioritize Mindful Eating
It's no secret that wintery days can make us crave comfort foods, some of which may be of the less nutritious kind. Try to practice mindful eating and pay attention to your body's hunger and fullness cues, savouring each bite. This will help you to enjoy your food more and also prevent overeating.
Stay Active
Don't let the chilly and wet weather deter you from your regular exercise routine. Whether it's a morning walk, a yoga session, or a quick home workout, making an effort to stay active can help you manage stress and boost happy hormones too!
Choose Healthy Alternatives
Opt for healthier versions of your favourite dishes. Use less salt and sugar and experiment with herbs and spices as a way of enhancing flavour. Why not try our Zoë Jamaican Jerk Spice Rub Kit?
Hydrate Wisely
Lower temperatures mean most of us have the heating running regularly. This, combined with less humidity in the air, can leave us feeling dry and dehydrated so it's essential we hydrate regularly. Alcohol and sugary drinks also contribute to dehydration so aim to drink water throughout the day and consider adding fresh fruit or herbs to give a nutritious flavour boost. Our Valencia Glass Tumbler Set is a beautiful way to get that H2O in.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Adequate rest is crucial for your overall health. Lack of sleep can lead to increased stress, overeating, and impaired immune function. Try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule to help keep your energy levels up and your stress levels down. Why not give our Sleep Well 30-Day Challenge a go?
Manage Stress
We all know that stress is bad for us. Practice techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to help keep stress at bay. Taking time for yourself to relax and recharge is essential for staying healthy during this time of year. Our Sam Yoga Eye Pillow with lavender and flaxseed, is the perfect addition to your self-care routine.
By practicing mindful eating, staying active, sleeping well, and managing stress, you can get the most out of this winter season. Remember, it's not about perfection, but about finding balance!

]]>Orchids, often dubbed the "queens of flowers," have captured the hearts of flower enthusiasts for centuries. With over 25,000 recognized species and countless hybrids, orchids are one of the most diverse and captivating plant families in the world and we love them here at Oleander!
Phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as moth orchids, are some of the most popular and widely cultivated orchids worldwide. Recognizable by their butterfly-like appearance, these orchids are prized for their elegant, cascading flower spikes and wide range of colours and patterns. Phalaenopsis orchids are also known for their ease of care, which is one of the reasons why they are so popular with our customers.
Whilst we typically only stock phalaenopsis orchids, there are many other varieties out there. Let us introduce you to some of them:
Cattleya Orchids: Cattleya orchids are renowned for their large, showy blooms and delightful fragrance. They have a striking appearance with vibrant colours. Thriving in bright, indirect light, these plants are cherished for their classic orchid shape.
Dendrobium Orchids: Dendrobium orchids offer a diverse array of shapes, sizes, and colours. Some dendrobiums produce tall canes with clusters of small flowers, while others have larger, fragrant blooms.
Oncidium Orchids: Oncidium orchids, often referred to as dancing lady orchids due to the resemblance of their flowers to a ballerina's skirt, are prized for their vibrant and unique blossoms. They come in an array of colours and patterns and are known for their charming and fragrant displays.
Miltoniopsis Orchids: Miltoniopsis orchids, also known as pansy orchids, are named for their resemblance to the cheerful pansy flower. These orchids are admired for their strikingly coloured, flat-faced blooms and are particularly popular among collectors and enthusiasts.
Vanda Orchids: Vanda orchids are known for their bold, colourful flowers and a unique growth habit. These orchids grow on other surfaces like trees, and they require bright light and good air circulation. Their aerial roots and vibrant blooms make them a favorite among orchid aficionados.
Lady's Slipper Orchids: Lady's slipper orchids, officially known as Paphiopedilum, are instantly recognizable by their distinctive pouch-shaped lip or slipper-like structure. These orchids come in various colours and patterns and are prized for their intriguing blooms.
Vanilla Orchids: While most people associate vanilla with an extract for baking, it's worth noting that vanilla comes from the pods of the Vanilla orchid. These orchids are native to tropical regions and are cultivated for their fragrant, flavour-rich beans used in culinary applications.
Orchids are an incredibly diverse group of plants, each with its own unique charm and appeal. From the graceful and easy-to-care-for Phalaenopsis to the exotic and fragrant Vanda orchids, there's an orchid for every taste and level of expertise. Among the stars of our holiday floral collection, the iconic poinsettia takes centre stage. Known for its stunning red bracts and rich green foliage, the poinsettia has become synonymous with the Christmas season, adding warmth and charm to homes and festive gatherings. We’re delving into the history, care tips, and creative ways to incorporate poinsettias into your holiday celebrations:
The poinsettia, scientifically known as Euphorbia pulcherrima, has a fascinating origin story. Legend has it that a humble Mexican girl named Pepita wanted to offer a gift to the baby Jesus but could only find weeds along the roadside. Miraculously, when she placed the weeds near the nativity scene, they transformed into the beautiful red blooms we now associate with poinsettias. In honour of this legend, December 12th is celebrated as National Poinsettia Day.
When selecting a poinsettia for your home or as a gift, look for plants with vibrant, evenly coloured bracts and rich green foliage. Ensure that the plant is well-balanced and free from signs of wilting or damage. Poinsettias are available in various colours beyond the classic red, including white, pink, and even marbled varieties, allowing you to personalize your festive decor.
To keep your poinsettia looking its best throughout the holiday season, follow these simple care tips:
Stuck for ideas on how to display your poinsettia? Why not arrange a cluster in a festive pot to create a stunning centerpiece for your holiday table. You could also add poinsettias to your traditional holiday wreath for a pop of colour and elegance. Or how about lining your staircase with poinsettia plants for a grand entrance that sets the tone for a joyous celebration? Creativity not your strong point? Not to worry, we’ve got beautiful poinsettia planters ready and waiting for you!
This Christmas, let the timeless beauty of these festive plants fill your home with the spirit of the season. Whether you're adorning your space or sharing them as thoughtful gifts, poinsettias are sure to bring warmth and joy to all who encounter them. Explore our exquisite collection of poinsettias and other holiday treasures here, and let the magic of Christmas blossom in every corner of your home.
]]>As the holiday season approaches, families across the world are preparing for the fun tradition of hanging stockings by the fireplace. But have you ever wondered how the tradition of stuffing stockings with small surprises came to be?
The tradition of hanging stockings by the fireplace has its roots in various cultural practices, each contributing a unique aspect to the modern-day tradition. One of the most popular legends revolves around St. Nicholas, a generous 4th-century bishop from Myra, now in modern-day Turkey. St. Nicholas was known for his acts of kindness and gift-giving, which eventually led to the legend of Santa Claus. The story goes that St. Nicholas once threw three bags of gold coins through the window of a poor family, and the bags landed in the children's stockings that were drying by the fire. Thus, the tradition of hanging stockings by the fireplace began.
The concept of stuffing stockings with small gifts became popular during the Victorian era in the 19th century. During this period, Christmas became a prominent celebration with many of the traditions we now associate with the holiday, including sending Christmas cards, decorating Christmas trees, and, of course, hanging stockings by the fireplace. Initially, stockings were filled with simple and practical items, such as fruit, nuts, and small toys. However, it wasn't long before small, festive trinkets and novelties became the norm, further cementing the tradition of stocking stuffers as we know it today.
Throughout the 20th century, stocking stuffers continued to evolve. The types of items that filled these stockings varied depending on the times, popular culture, and family traditions. From practical gifts like socks, mittens, and homemade items, to toys and candies, stocking stuffers have diversified to include gadgets, gift cards, and other personalized items that reflect the interests of the recipients.
What began as a simple act of generosity has evolved into a cherished custom celebrated by families around the world. The evolution of stocking stuffers mirrors the changing times and our love for bringing joy to those we care about during the holiday season. So, as you prepare to hang your stockings by the fireplace this year, remember that you're participating in a tradition that has deep historical roots and continues to bring warmth and delight to our hearts every Christmas.
We’ve got the perfect stocking stuffers for all the family at Oleander! Shop online here for pickup or delivery within the GTA, or come browse our store in person.

]]>Now the leaves have changed colour and the air has taken a turn on the crisp side, there's a certain magic in the atmosphere that heralds the arrival of sweater weather. The cozy, comforting feeling of wrapping yourself in a warm, soft sweater is one of the great pleasures of the fall and winter seasons. While there are countless materials to choose from, alpaca wool stands out to us in the flower shop as a natural and sustainable choice and we’ve been carrying items from the Pokoloko range for many years now. Let us explain why alpaca wool is a must-have addition to your cold-weather wardrobe.
Alpaca wool comes from the fleece of the alpaca, a gentle and domesticated cousin of the llama native to the Andes Mountains of South America. These animals are cherished for their luxurious and fine fibers, which make for a premium yarn resulting in some of the coziest and stylish items of clothing on the market.
Alpaca wool is also renowned for its remarkable softness. Unlike other animal fibers, alpaca wool lacks the coarse, prickly feeling sometimes associated with wool. It's a great option for those with sensitive skin who find traditional sheep's wool to be itchy.
Excellent insulation properties make Alpaca wool one of the warmest natural fibers available. It's lightweight yet incredibly effective at trapping heat, ensuring you stay toasty in even the coldest weather.
Alpaca wool is naturally hypoallergenic, making it an excellent choice for those prone to allergies or skin sensitivities. It lacks lanolin, a common allergen found in sheep's wool.
Known for its durability, a well-cared-for alpaca sweater can last for many years, making it a sustainable choice that reduces the need for constant replacement.
Alpaca wool is breathable, meaning it can help regulate your body temperature by wicking moisture away from your skin. This keeps you comfortable and prevents that clammy feeling you often get when wearing synthetic fibers.
Alpacas have a lower environmental impact compared to some other livestock. They have soft hooves that don't disturb the soil, and they graze without uprooting plants. Because of this, alpaca farming is generally considered more sustainable.
Alpaca wool is not only practical but also stylish. From sweaters to socks, mittens to hats, and headbands to scarves, we’ve got a new shipment of Pokoloko garments in store now in various designs, colours, and textures, making it easy to find the perfect warm-weather gear to match your personal style.
So as the mercury drops, welcome sweater weather with open arms and something warm and cozy from our Pokoloko range. Shop online here or visit us in store.
]]>Flowers are one of the best ways to brighten our spaces. Whether it's a few stems of your favourite bloom, or a larger bouquet, choosing the right vase can significantly enhance the beauty of your floral display. We’ll guide you on how to select the perfect vase to complement your flowers, ensuring that they shine in all their natural glory.
The first thing you need to consider is the type of flowers you plan to display. Different flowers have varying stem lengths, shapes, and sizes, and your vase choice should harmonize with these features. For long-stemmed flowers like roses, lilies, or sunflowers, opt for tall and slender vases that provide support and allow the stems to stand straight. For shorter blooms such as daisies or peonies, choose shorter, wider vases that will showcase the natural shape of the flowers. If you’re displaying a mixed bouquet however, choosing a vase with a slightly flared neck will accommodate the various stem lengths well.
Here are some of the vase shapes we work with at Oleander:
Cylinder Vases: These come in different sizes, are versatile and work well with most flower types. They provide stability for both short and tall stems and can accommodate a round compact style of arrangement as well as a more flowing garden style.
Bud Vases: Perfect for showcasing a single, delicate flower like a tulip or a rose. The small neck of a bud vase supports the flower's natural curve.
Hourglass Vases: These vases are wider at the middle and can support fuller arrangements, making them suitable for bouquets with mixed flower types or very large arrangements.
Bowl or Low Vases: Great for short, compact flowers like daisies or peonies. The wide opening allows us to create a lush and full arrangement - perfect for a table centrepiece!
You next need to consider the colour and material that the vase is made of as these can play a significant role in the overall aesthetic of your floral display. Keep the following things in mind:
Clear glass offers a classic and timeless look, allowing the focus to remain on the flowers. It's versatile and suits almost any flower type. Plus, it makes it easier to see when your flowers need a water top up or refresh. Coloured glass adds a pop of colour and can complement or contrast with the flowers. Ceramic containers provide texture and a rustic feel. Choose earthy tones for a natural look or bold colours for a more vibrant contrast. Modern and sleek, metal vases can be an excellent choice for contemporary flower arrangements. Metallic finishes like gold or silver provide an elegant touch.
Lastly, size matters! When selecting a vase, make sure it is proportionate to the size of your bouquet. A vase that is too small can make your flowers look crowded, while a vase that is too large may overpower delicate blooms. The general rule of thumb is that the vase should be one-half to two-thirds the height of your bouquet.
Selecting the right vase for your flowers is an art that can elevate your floral arrangements to a whole new level. Need help? No problem! We have a variety of different vase options available to purchase and we will even design right into your very own vases that you already have at home. Pop into the shop or take a look at our floral arrangement and vase options here.

]]>As the mornings are darker and the days grow shorter, it's easy to feel a sense of melancholy. With the diminishing sunlight, it can be challenging to stay positive and motivated during the fall season. However, autumn offers its own unique charm and opportunities for self-care and introspection. Here at Oleander, we’re making the most of the shorter days and embracing the cozy ambiance that this season brings. And we’re here to help you do the same!
One of the best ways to make the most of shorter fall days is to fully immerse yourself in seasonal activities. Instead of lamenting the reduced daylight hours, take advantage of the beautiful fall colours and brisk air. Some of our team’s favourite outdoor ideas include apple picking, pumpkin carving, fall hikes and s'mores over a warm fire.
Another way to embrace the cooler weather is to transform your home into a cozy sanctuary. Make your living space inviting and warm by decorating with fall-themed accents and comfortable furniture and textiles, such as cozy blankets, plush pillows and soft throws. Candles and soft lighting also help to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Use these ideas to create a cozy nook for reading, relaxation or for enjoying your favourite cup of tea!
The shorter fall days are also an excellent opportunity to engage in mindful activities that promote self-care and personal growth. Consider trying the following: Meditation and yoga to cultivate inner peace and serenity. Journaling to reflect on your thoughts and experiences during this season. Reading - dive into books and literature that inspire and transport you to other worlds. Art and craft projects - tap into your creativity and make homemade gifts or decor.
The colder weather is the perfect excuse to whip up hearty and soul-warming dishes with seasonal ingredients such as butternut squash, pumpkin and sweet potatoes. Serve up comfort foods to family and friends and sip on hot cider, chai lattes, or hot chocolate!
Shorter fall days with less sunlight don't have to be a cause for gloom. Embrace the opportunities this season brings and by doing so, you can make the most of the shorter fall days and find beauty in the changing season. Check out our beautiful array of fall-inspired home decor and giftware here.
]]>As the more vibrant colours of summer have faded and the crisp air of autumn sweeps in, we’ve refreshed our surroundings with the warm and inviting hues of the new season. Fall brings a stunning palette of colours, from rich burgundies and deep oranges to earthy greens and golden yellows, and you can be sure here at Oleander we’re full-on embracing these tones in your flower arrangements!
Burgundy is a quintessential fall colour that exudes sophistication and warmth. Our burgundy blooms come in the form of colour-rich flowers such as dahlias, ranunculus, and chrysanthemums and add a touch of elegance to any arrangement. We’re pairing these deep hues with soft blush pinks and warm oranges to create a romantic look.
Terracotta and rust are colours that bring a sense of earthiness to floral arrangements. Combined with creamy neutrals like ivory and beige, and textured elements such as branching and seed pods, these fall colours add a rustic touch and create warm tones that evoke the cozy feeling of autumn evenings by the fireplace.
Golden yellow is a cheerful and contemporary fall colour which embodies the beauty of autumn leaves. Sunflowers are the perfect choice for infusing a touch of brightness into an arrangement and they perfectly capture the happy glow of fall.
While blue may not be the first colour that comes to mind for fall, this cool shade can add a pretty twist to your flower arrangements. Flowers such as blue hydrangeas and delphiniums, when balanced with warmer accent colours such as peach and copper, produce a beautiful and unique fall arrangement.
All of our designers are busy creating stunning autumn-inspired floral arrangements that celebrate the beauty of the season. In need of some blooms to bring the essence of autumn into your space? ]]>Many people find joy in decorating their homes with beautiful cut flowers, however, for allergy sufferers, the beauty of these floral arrangements can come at a price - sneezing, watery eyes, and general discomfort. And usually, Spring, Summer and Autumn are the worst times of year for allergy sufferers. But fear not, because we’ve put together a list of the best and worst cut flowers for those that are sensitive to pollen, helping you to make informed choices when selecting flowers for your home, loved ones, or for those special events.
Best for Allergy Sufferers
Roses: Rose pollen is typically too heavy to be carried by the wind, making these flowers less likely to trigger allergic reactions. Opt for varieties with high petal counts - they tend to produce less pollen.
Orchids: not only stunning, but also hypoallergenic! With minimal pollen production, these exotic blooms are less likely to cause discomfort for those with allergies.
Tulips: Known for their vibrant colours and iconic shape, tulips have a low pollen count and are less likely to aggravate allergies. To reduce the risk even further, remove the anthers (pollen-producing parts) from the centre of the flower.
Hydrangeas: These elegant, globe-like flowers have a very low pollen count, making them an excellent choice for allergy sufferers.
Snapdragons: Snapdragons are not only visually appealing with their unique shape, but they also produce minimal pollen!
Worst for Allergy Sufferers
Lilies: Lilies are notorious for their potent pollen. The powdery substance can easily become airborne and cause allergic reactions. If you're set on having lilies, remove the stamens to reduce pollen exposure.
Daisies: Daisies may seem innocent, but their open structure allows pollen to be easily released into the air.
Chrysanthemums: Mums have a high pollen content and can therefore be problematic for allergy sufferers.
Sunflowers: Sunflowers may bring sunshine to any room, but their large, vibrant flowers produce a considerable amount of pollen. For those with allergies, sunflowers might not be the best choice for a centerpiece.
Baby's Breath: Often used as a filler in floral arrangements, baby's breath can release pollen particles into the air, contributing to allergy symptoms. Hypoallergenic fillers like ferns or eucalyptus are a good alternative.
Enjoying cut flowers doesn't have to come at the expense of your well-being. By choosing the right blooms, you can experience beautiful allergy-friendly arrangements without causing allergic reactions. Order your cut flower arrangements here for pickup or delivery within the GTA. If you have an allergy to a specific flower and would like to make sure it’s not included in your design, be sure to let us know in the special instructions box when you place your order.

This magical time of year not only offers a treasure trove of colours and varieties, but also unparalleled value for money for our customers. Read on to find out our reasons why late summer and early fall stand out as the best time of year for a most extraordinary flower experience.
Abundance of Colours
Late summer and early fall flowers have rich and vibrant hues which evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia. The transition from the bright and bold colours of summer to the deeper, more muted tones of fall creates a visual contrast for arrangements that is absolutely beautiful. Oranges, reds, purples, and yellows set a picturesque backdrop for not just Thanksgiving events, but everyday fall decor too.
Variety Like No Other
The floral kingdom comes alive during this period, offering a wide selection of flowers that cater to every taste and preference. From bright and bold sunflowers and elegant dahlias to classic roses and striking chrysanthemums, late summer and early fall showcase the best variety of blooms, giving us an outstanding selection to work with as we create our unique and stunning arrangements.
Better Value and Accessibility
Late summer and early fall also have another huge advantage – better value for our customers. The increased availability of flowers during this time gives us the ability to create more extravagant arrangements without compromising on quality.
Inspiration for Our Designers
This season serves as an incredible source of inspiration for us here at the flower shop. Changing landscapes, unique textures, and evolving colour palettes offer endless possibilities for us to get creative with our designs.
Perfect for Celebrations
The charming beauty of late summer and early fall flowers makes them the ideal choice for special occasions and celebrations. Whether it's a wedding, a birthday or Thanksgiving party, or a corporate event, these flowers add warmth, elegance and grace - aligning perfectly with the season.
So, whether you're looking to adorn your home or are planning a special event, we can help! Place your order here for pickup or delivery within the GTA.
Prices for flowers and foliage are set by the market. When something becomes more popular, supply and demand dictates that price increases. Over the last few years, as more garden style designs have gained popularity, greenery prices have significantly increased. Certain types of foliage, eucalyptus and ruscus, for example, can cost way more than others, and depending on how and what type of greenery is used in a design, it may not be the least expensive option. For example, a garland looks beautiful along a table but requires a lot more product than a traditional floral centerpiece.
Many customers come into Oleander with inspiration photos that have elaborate greenery designs which are absolutely stunning, but then they are surprised when they find out how much it will cost to actually bring that look to life. Pinterest has a lot to answer for!
The other main factor, aside from the product, that goes into the cost of any arrangement or event, is of course the labour. Often, greenery requires more labour to install than some fresh flower designs. With weddings, for example, greenery elements sometimes have to be built on site and within a very limited amount of time. They also must be taken down at the end of the event, which results in higher labour costs than a floral centerpiece, for example, which can be made in advance, delivered, and placed on tables with relative ease, and then is taken home by the couple or guests at the end of the night.
There are some less expensive ways to incorporate greenery into your designs though. A few carefully placed branches can look incredibly elegant down the centre of a table, and a touch of the right greenery in an arrangement can really make the flowers sing. There are also some less costly varieties of greenery, such as some types of fern, but these don’t always have the right texture or shape, or the ability to withstand the environment.
The main way to keep costs down, however, is to be open to ideas! At Oleander, we’ll always be honest about what we can do within your budget and will suggest alternatives if necessary. We also love to use local, seasonal greenery, and will only ever use the highest quality product.
The bottom line? Greenery is gorgeous, but not always the least expensive option. Looking for wedding or event flowers? Give us a call on 416 236 8273 and we’ll be happy to discuss your requirements.
]]>A few weeks ago we received a comment from a customer expressing their disappointment following a photograph they were sent of flowers they had gifted to a loved one. Whilst our number one priority is and always will be customer satisfaction, we want to explain a little bit about why a quick iPhone snap of an arrangement will never do it justice and can even spoil the whole flower-giving experience.
First of all, bear in mind that real life is three-dimensional, and so are real flower arrangements. Arrangements may appear to be smaller in reality when compared to the two-dimensional photos on our website. Pictures on the website are taken by a photographer, and with a professional camera. A traditional camera has a much larger sensor, in comparison to a smartphone, and the larger the sensor, the bigger the surface area available to capture light on, and thus the better quality of image. In comparison, photos taken indoors at home, under standard household lamps, can make the colours look off, or too dark, and the image can appear blurred or distorted. Camera distortion also warps proportions. Ever taken a less-than-flattering selfie?
Also consider that photos on a website are angled and cropped to focus entirely on the arrangement. When you take a photo in your home, the image may be cluttered with whatever else is in the background. This creates a distraction and can distort or affect the sense of scale, often resulting in a misrepresentation of the arrangement.
Another point to remember is that website images usually show fully bloomed flowers. Often we will send an arrangement with flowers budding or just starting to bloom so that the recipient is able to enjoy the blooming process for the longest period possible. This can make the arrangement appear to be smaller or less “full” at first.
Sometimes, recipients decide to split their flowers and arrange them into several vases. This often happens when a large hand-tied bouquet is sent. Oleander’s arrangements are designed to be displayed as a “whole”, and therefore, once split or rearranged, will look completely different to the website image or originally intended design. If you are considering sending a large arrangement, we suggest ordering flowers designed directly into a vase.
As florists, we’re always striving to bring a space ‘to life’ with flowers. The luxuriousness, and therefore one’s enjoyment of a floral arrangement lies in the fine details - the vibrancy of colour, variety of texture, and subtle scents that an arrangement provides. These elements are so incredibly difficult to capture by photograph, and to try and do so will often leave one disappointed. Our advice? Ditch the dodgy pics and leave the flower photography to the professionals. Send a good old-fashioned thank you note instead (we have some beautiful note cards in store right now!)
We at Oleander pride ourselves on delivering excellent value for money. Together with our unique design skills, superior product, and exceptional customer service, we want to make sure all our customers are happy. If, for any reason, there is a concern with your order, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the shop. Floral orders can be placed here for pickup or delivery within the GTA.

]]>Summer has well and truly hit the GTA and with the scorching weather we’ve had recently, we thought we’d take the time to share our tips for how to care for your flower arrangements on these really warm days. Perfect for when you receive or send one of our beautiful bespoke bouquets!
We all know that flowers need sunshine in order to grow, but once those beauties have been cut, their top two enemies really are the direct sun and the heat and so they may need a little bit of TLC in order to survive when the temperature climbs.
The strong summer rays are just too much for delicate petals to handle, so to help avoid wilting, our number one tip is to keep flowers out of direct sunlight and display them in a cool room at home. Definitely keep your flowers away from sunrooms and sunny window sills!
Flowers are thirsty things – especially in a heatwave, so be sure to give them plenty of water. Check the water level in the vase daily, and keep it regularly topped up with fresh water.
On hot days, us humans may love a cool breeze blowing in from an open patio door but your flowers won’t. Display the flowers away from really drafty areas.
Some plants, like Orchids and ferns thrive in tropical heat, so they love a good daily misting with water – especially when it is super hot. Why not use our Coral Plant Mister to help you look stylish whilst keeping your plants cool?
Give your blooms a good trim! Every couple of days, we recommend our customers carefully snip a little off the bottom of each stem in order to aid water absorption, allowing the flowers to drink up as much water as possible.
Ensure someone is home to receive your floral delivery. Flower arrangements cannot be left on doorsteps during hot weather as they will perish very quickly.
Following these tips will ensure you get the most out of your floral arrangements and will keep your blooms fresh for as long as possible.
Looking to send a special floral gift for a summer birthday or just want to treat yourself to a beautiful seasonal arrangement? As your local florist, Oleander can help! We have a gorgeous online range of seasonal bouquets and summer blooms available for delivery or pickup within the GTA. Place your order here.

]]>First of all, flowers are heavier than they look and being a florist is way more labour-intensive than most would assume. Picking up, transporting, and cleaning and processing all the flowers translates to hours on your feet lifting heavy buckets of water and greenery. Unpacking large shipments and then preparing and packing finished arrangements for delivery is physically hard work.
We’re in a perpetual race against the clock! Flowers wilt and die very quickly and we only want to sell the freshest blooms to our customers so we have to accurately time purchases, orders and deliveries. Most clients, particularly for a wedding or important event, want to see blooms that have opened up and not buds so this also has to be factored in.
Because flowers are perishable, we can’t get too much of a head start on making arrangements. This means heavy flower periods, like the holidays, Valentine’s, Mother’s day, etc. are really demanding not only on the hours worked, but also on our bodies, and especially on our tootsies! We’re standing in one spot designing for hours on end to get all the arrangements made. Up to 12 hours a day, for several days in a row!
We’re very early risers - buying the freshest plants and flowers and organizing stock pickups all happens during the early hours of the morning, as does organizing and prioritizing all the orders that come in overnight.
Like an even and comfortable climate-controlled work environment? Then floristry isn’t for you! Our flowers must be kept in a cooler, and working out on site setting up weddings, events and doing planters can have us working in extreme hot and cold temperatures for hours on end.
This non-stop graft can also be really dirty - all those flowers need cleaning and processing before they are ready to be used in designs and all the flower buckets must be regularly scrubbed to keep the flowers as fresh as possible. No French manicures here!
Taking orders, answering the phone, assisting customers in the gift shop, preparing and gift wrapping orders ready for pickup or delivery and striving to meet our customers’ high expectations, means that floristry can be an incredibly stressful and demanding job at times. However, there are many many things to love about working in this field. Participating in our clients’ emotional milestones, and contributing to special memories, such as baby showers, births, weddings, anniversaries, and even funerals, is an absolute privilege and one we are extremely grateful to be involved with. The opportunity to work with nature’s seasons and be creative, is also one of the reasons we just cannot get enough of working with flowers!
Want to try your hand at designing? We regularly host fun and interactive workshops where you can learn the tricks of the trade. Check our website or follow us on Instagram @oleanderfloraldesign for future dates.
]]>Here’s the thing, true lilies belong to the genus Lilium, a group of large-flowered plants that grow from bulbs. When you order lilies for your home, you’re typically choosing from either Asiatic (non-scented) or Oriental lilies – the latter of which give us that distinctive sweet lily fragrance that tends to strongly divide opinion.
Calla lilies, however, belong to the genus Zantedeschia and it’s thought they get their name from the Greek word for beauty — calla. The flowers have an interesting mythological history. Calla lilies are said to come from the ancient goddess Hera, the wife of Zeus. Legend has it that Zeus brought Hercules to nurse from Hera while she was sleeping. Hera awoke and pushed the baby away from her. Drops of milk flew across the sky creating the milky way and everywhere they landed on earth, calla lilies bloomed.
Despite these flowers not being a “true” lily, we like them because they’re versatile, fragrance-free, and give great structure to arrangements. They also come in a wide variety of bright colours! Calla lilies are also available in plant form and are fairly easy to care for.
Be warned, though – you’ll want to keep calla lilies away from children and furry friends! They’re toxic to pets and humans who ingest any part of the plant.
Here’s how to care for your cut calla lilies in a bouquet:
Fill a clean vase with water and add the flower food packet that came with your arrangement
Cut stems at a 45-degree angle so they can absorb the most water
Recut stems and change the water every 2-3 days
Keep vase away from direct sunlight or cool drafts
Want to place an order for seasonal fresh flowers? Head here for pickup or delivery within the GTA!

The most popular types of arrangements that customers order for funerals are:
Casket Sprays - arrangements that are placed directly on the casket. Casket sprays can be designed to sit on top of the casket when it is either open or once it has been closed. These arrangements are almost always purchased by immediate family members and are not generally an appropriate purchase for others. They are usually larger arrangements and are meant to be viewed on top of the casket.
Standing Sprays - ranging in size from small to large, these are funeral flower arrangements that are attached to a stand or easel. They’re usually placed next to the casket. Sprays are typically sent directly to the funeral home for use during the funeral service.
Vase Arrangements - these smaller arrangements are appropriate for family members, friends, and co-workers to send directly to the family’s home unless otherwise instructed.
Traditionally common funeral flowers include lilies, chrysanthemums, roses, orchids, and carnations but it’s less common to send specific flowers nowadays. Sometimes a family will request arrangements featuring a favourite flower of the deceased or an arrangement in the deceased’s favourite colour palette.
Despite being a flower shop, we always recommended that you respect the family’s wishes if they’ve explicitly asked for no flowers, or have mentioned that they’d like another show of condolence in lieu of flowers, for example, a donation to charity. It is also important to note that some religions and cultures consider sending flowers as an inappropriate gesture so be sure to check first with the family if you’re unsure.
Looking for an alternative to sending flowers? Many of our customers choose to gift plants. Peace lilies and orchids are a popular choice and a beautiful way to convey your sentiments.
We understand every situation is different and should you want something specific, please contact us directly to discuss an appropriate flower option for the home or funeral service. You can order online here or give us a call on 416 236 8273 to discuss your requirements.
